You know sometimes I get really tired of the way national netball associations , as well as some others, have to be literraly begging for help for its national netballers to represent their country.
We need to get this thing right in the Caribbbean especially with our team sports.
Good luck Jamaica and I hope the business houses and other interested persons come through for you guys.

Really... the above story speaks to Barbados passing up the opportunity to host the CNA Under 16 tournament in 2009 under the guise that the netball stadium will be being refurbished ....and who are we kidding. Did the Barbados netball Association get something in writting from the powers that be with respect to the stadium I know they did not.
Was not the 2006 AFNA qualifiers held at the gymnasium while the same plans for the refurbishment of the stadium were on the cards?
Did Barbados really pass up this opportunity to host this tournament and allow Jamaica- the alternate host to organise the tournament ... and will Barbados be able to host in 2010?
And what nonsense is this about Barbados not benefitting from their Under 16 teams...The goal defence in the 2008 Barbados team was this year's under 16 captain. The goal attack played under 16 , then under 21 and now senior in 2008. The Browne sisters all played under 16, under 21 and seniors.And the list goes on...one could go back to Julie Phillips and Denise Alleyne, Olivia Walcott etc who played in what was then a school girls team, then played under 21 and then seniors. The record is there, we don't have to rely on anyone's memory.

Netball Shots - Jamaica wins AFNA championships on a trot
Netball Shots
I gather from this distance that this championship would not inspire the Region's netball fans that we are ready and able to take on the top countries in the world.
Canada must be very pleased with their performance especially in their game against Barbados.

Barbados knew that if you fail to prepare then you must be prepared to fail. It is mindboggling that the sport would have gone back at least 10 years in terms of preparation time....about 4-5 weeks before tournament quad was called to trials!!!!!

This report is by Pam Proverbs who is in St. Vincent officiating as an umpire.
Seems as if things are beginning to get ragged both on and off the court. I am one who is not all impressed by news coming out of St. Vincent in terms of standard of our game when you try to match it up to the international standard. It appears the region is still about 30 to 40 goals behind the top four countries in the world.
Madam President of AFNA...what are the plans of your organization to move the sport forward in the region.

According to Pamala Proverbs, the Barbados team showed signs of not enough practise as a team when they lost their first game to old time rivals ..T & T.
As a matter of fact..Sunday July 20, would go down as some type of record in the history of sports between Barbados and Trinidad and Trinidad defeated the Bajans in Netball, Basketball and Volleyball

AFNA CHAMPIONSHIPS - JULY 19-27 IN ST. VINCENT & GRENADINES
Only six teams will be taking part in this weekend's AFNA championship. This is a disappointing turn out for a region which boasts of having the highest number of members in the International Federation Netball Associaiton.
Barbados team has been strenghtened by the return of some former players who have a great deal of international experience among them: GOAL SHOOTER - LYDIA BISHOP: DEFENCE - SHERRY MARTINDALE AND RHEANN NILES: CENTRE - DIONNE QUARLESS. The rest of the team is made up of: VETERAN - DON SMALL WHO IS ALSO CAPTAIN: KIZZY MARVILLE, SABRINA BRATHWAITE: NIKITA PIGGOTT: LAUREL BROWNE: JANELLE SEALY, LISA PUCKERIN.
This Barbados team should give a good account of itself and must be aware that it cannot afford to lose to any Caribbean country which is ranked lower than 12th in the world.
Their toughest matches will be against their old nemisis = Trinidad and Tobago and constant thorne in the side - st. Vincent and the Grenadines. Jamaica has opted to send seven of their Under 21 players , but should still win the tournament.
Former IFNA Director - Annette Beckett is hoping for a good tournament in terms of style and tactics as she is very aware of how far behind the region is when compared to Australia or New Zealand.
The countries taking part are: TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO; JAMAICA, CANADA, ST. VINCENT AND THE GRENADINES, ST. LUCIA , AND BARBADOS

NEWS OUT OF ST. KITTS
Netball upset Monday May 26 2008 by Saju Ng’alla Last Saturday
The Netball Premier League Championship was supposed to be decided when FirstCaribbean Mystix went up against the Coca Cola Shamrocks. Instead, the game ended in utter chaos with referees quarrelling among themselves, coaches set and ready to rumble on the court, players crying, while others rejoiced, and off the court in the stands, confused and weary fans had no idea what was going on. It is important to point out at this time that Mystix, on paper, is indeed the better team. The players on that team are much more skilful and fitter. However, the Coca Cola Shamrocks are a very well coached team and operate as a unit.
Also, most of the players on the Shamrocks’ team play the game with an emotional detachment. However, with Mystix, that team plays on an emotional roller coaster ride. So, you had the cool and well disciplined Shamrocks against the radical raw energy of the Mystix. The result of such a match-up was a very entertaining and hard fought game. The game started with Mystix jumping out to an early lead. However, the Shamrocks came charging back and had as many as a four-goal lead on their opponents. Much of this had a lot to do with Mechelle Liburd, who in this game played in the goal shooter position. Liburd scored an amazing 30 goals from 40 attempts, and goal attack Avonelle Julian scored eight goals from 11 attempts.
On the other side, the best goal shooter in St. Kitts/Nevis, Vanessa Isles, was having a miserable day. She was constantly missing shot, was out of position and was outplayed by Shamrocks’ goalkeeper. Isles only scored 16 goals from 30 attempts. With Isles having a terrible day much of the scoring fell on Mystix goal attack Tenelle Lapsey, who scored 22 goals from 29 attempts. With Mystix having scoring problem, the Shamrocks led for most of the second half, or at least so it seemed. Now, with only seconds left in the game, the scoreboard showed that the Shamrocks were up by two goals.
So, Shamrocks slowed down their game and instead of seeking to score more goals decided to take care of the ball until the final whistle. The scoreboard stated the Shamrocks had won 38-36, and became the league’s champions. However, according to the game’s officials, the score was wrong, and the game had truly ended in a tie at 38-38.
Everybody, it seemed, started to argue. Shamrocks’ management officials announced that they will file an objection. League officials told Sun St. Kitts/Nevis an emergency meeting would be held today to solve the problem.

GOOD NEWS FOR NETBALL IN BARBADOS
Kudos are in order for Mr. Julian Annel, A sports tour operator in Barbados, for being instrumental in arranging a scholarship for two of Barbados former Under 16 national netballers- MAKEBA CLARKE AND JEHLESAL BRATHWAITHE at ST. Bedes school in Sussex ,England .
Mr. Annel, organised the scholarship for the young ladies, building on the reputation held by the BNA in terms of English schools making visits to Barbados. This work would have been spear headed by the former president- Ms. Annette Beckett- and she was elated that Mr. Annel has been able to take the partnership to the stage of getting a scholarship.
Its going to cost about US 75.000.00 to ensure that all the expenses are covered, but Mr. Annel has already made contact with the Barbados Government and the Barbados Olympic Assocaition,as well as members of the corporate community in Barbados, so he feels confident that all the costs will be met.
Current President of the BNA. Ocatvia Gibson thinks its a good thing for the sport and is pleased that these netballers will get exposure to netball at a different level.
WELL DONE MR. ANNEL AND VISITORS TO THIS BLOG AWAIT A WORD FROM YOU AS TO HOW WE CAN ASSIST TO ENSURE THAT ALL THE YOUNGSTERS EXPENSES ARE MET.
