BNA severs ties with manager of Senior National Team

The Barbados Netball Association has dismissed the Manager of the Barbados Senior Team . This follows a series of "unfortunate circumstances" over the past years with respect to management of national netball teams. 2011 netball opening

The 2011 netball season was launched on Sunday night with a touch of class befitting the only sport which is played exclusively by females with the new executive breathing a freshness and innovation into the sport at the Queen's College Hall in St. James.

            The oft times fractious nature of the local netball was forgotten as the glamour of the opening ceremony provided content of great organization with the who is who of local sport and netball past and present being regaled and recognised at the event.  While new president Juanita Cordle boasted of the 2% increase of teams, 29 out of 34 of the registered clubs took  part in the uniform display with the Central Bank capturing the first spot.

            Earlier Cordle unveiled her executive's vision of propelling netball further at the club, national and international level with the healthy relationship between the BNB and the Barbados Association of Netball Umpires (BARNU) promising even greater things. 

            While Cordle indicated that $45 000 would be needed for Barbados to take part in a tri series with Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago, May 8 – 14, the former national player underlined the fact that the senior national team was using every opportunity to sharpen for the World Championships in Singapore from July 1 – 10, this year.

            The under 21 squad had started training since last October for the World Championship in Glasgow, Scotland in 2013 while the under 16 team was intensifying training for the Youth Championship in St. Kitts, this year.

            In giving the feature address Permanent Secretary in Culture & Sport stressed that netball, like most of the other sports in the island, contained the skills and knowledge within their ranks of carrying the game forward.  Farnum also promised the continued support of her ministry.

            One of the features of the night was the naming of the various tables after past and presents stalwarts of netball with citations being  given by MC Bryan Holder who as a teacher at Queen's College was at home in every sense of providing a seamless show.  A brief presentation by Marvo Manning also enhanced the class of the evening.

            With entertainment being provided by the matchless youth Cherish Breedy who powerfully sang, 'Don't Ever Give Up', the netballers would have been inspired for an impressive 2011 season.  Monique James might not have the vocal power of Breedy but her rendition of 'I just can't Give Up Now' blended beautifully with the new vision of the netballers.

            The lion share of the awards ended on the table where Pine Hill St. Barnabas were sitting although Structural Systems Silver Raiders, C.O. Williams Rangers, Guardian General Pride of Villa picked up a number of the lower division honours with the Raiders denying St. Barnabas the knockout crown.

The game was won by Barbados 48-37 eventualy, although it took a complete change of the attacking part of Barbados game to achieve this.
Coach Waithe started with Walcott at GA and Bishop at GS and Quarless at C with Smith at WA.
This combination was slow, unenterprising, and above all inept. Olivia Walcott has had her best days at this sport, and really ought not to be playing at this level. The quick, agile Walcott is no more and therefore she clogged up the entrance to the circle resulting in Bishop having to play outside the box . This meant that sometimes she was starved of the ball by an ineffective mid court.
The other end of the court was also in trouble, as captain Martindale did not appear to be present, and Puckeirin has never been useful at goal keeper. The scottish attack had a ball ..... with the goal shooter rolling and finishing about a foot away from the pool in the middle of the goal circle. Had the Scottish lass been more accurate , her country would have led Barbados by at least five goals at half time.

However, the third quarter saw a new attacking unit of Piggott-GA, Browne -GS, Shepherd - WA and Quarless back at centre after a minor spill. Piggott was quick and roamed the centre court at will, and when necessary put some good passes into GS Browne. This stopped Scotland in their tracks and Bdos stretched their lead and eventually won fairly comfortably.

Coach Waithe must now be sure that Walcott cannot play Goal attack at this level any longer, no matter how well she played in the past. She must also be aware that if Bishop does not get the ball she cannot shoot, so the centre court must work out a much better way to get the ball to her. At the other end, the defenders need real work at their reflexes and man-to-man tactics.

Barbados should not have to fight to beat this scottish team, as it is obviously in the rebuilding stage , although their attacking machine seems well oiled..it just need a better finishing job and less turn overs.

New year...New Rules , New Resolve, Better game

Hello everyone:

first let me apologise for not doing the expected thing in wishing everyone a happy xmas and all the best for the new year. HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE AND I WISH THAT YOU ARE ABLE TO ATTAIN MOST OF IF NOT ALL YOUR GOALS THIS YEAR.

Netball wise..in the region, Jamaica has stepped up its preparation for the 2009 Wporld Youth Cup, Tobago's school competition is on, The Bdos Workers Union awards ceremony was held and announcement made that a computer scholarship at the Bdos Workers Union College will be on offer in this year's competition.

Over in Australia and New Zealand, plans are all but completed for the second semi professional tournament with another Jamaican netballer set to join the tournament.

In Barbados the Under 16 and the Under 21 squads are at practise at different stages in preparation for their upcoming engagements in April and July.

Oh No...Not again

The night of December 4th 2008 was not a particularly good one for the administration of netball in Barbados.

Without going into the details, at the end of the night of the 35th Annual general meeting of the BNA, two posts on the seven member board remained vacant.

The incumbent president, Octavia Gibson, was elected unopposed. However, the entire netball fraternity was in a state of shock and disbelief when it was discovered that the person who was touted to challenge Ms. Gibson, was not nominated by her club. This will go down as one of the mysteries of sport generally in 2008. Suffice is to say, that this was a really unfortunate occurrence.

There was no nomination for the post of first vice president or the post of secretary.
Daisy Browne was re-elected the Treasurer, while Sharon Corbin of Banks Spurs sits on the Board for the first time in the position of Assistant Secretary/Treasurer.
Veronica Harris and Frank Harper were elected as the other directors.

The Association will now be in a state of abeyance as according to the constitution a period of 30 days must elapse before any attempt is made to reconvene the meeting. In the event that no nominations are received, nominations will be accepted from the floor!!!!!!!

There are persons who were prepared to offer themselves for the unfilled posts, but for varying reasons their nomination forms were not the right place at the right time.

I believe every country in the Caribbean can identify with these sentiments.
Barbados recognised the importance of competition other than against its neigbors leading up to the world championships in 2003. As a result of playing aginst Australia, New Zealand, England, South Africa and Jamaica , Barbados landed a 7th place world ranking.

Barbados just went on a tour of South Africa , which caused its rating to drop to twelve at this time.

Barbados's inability to play intense and tough netball within a 48 hour period has manifested itself again... it appears the Bajans forgot to turn up for the final test against South AFrica and were trounced, after being competitive in the first two tests, although losing.

This obviously speaks to the team's fitness level both physcial and mental and clearly is an area which needs to be worked on.

Barbados goal shooter Lydia Bishop had a great second test missing only three of her attempts at goal. Have not heard about many other outstanding performances by the Barbados players. The South AFrican coach seemed to be fairly satified with her players performance, despite the closeness of the first two matches.

South AFrica will be in the Caribbean next week - Jamaica to be precise - where they will play a tri nation test series involving host Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago.

South Africa defeats Barbados in first test in Cape town

A new look South AFrica team defeated a changed Barbados team by 9 goals in their first test match.

The South African coach believes the game was too close for comfort, while the Bajans must feel that with a more total and consistent effort, they may just defeat this 9th ranked South African team.

According to a Nation Newspaper report The Barbados Netball Association has selected the following persons to represent Barbados in the three match test series in South Africa:
Laurel Browne, Lisa Puckerin, Nikita Piggott, Kizzy Marville, Sabrina Smith, Shekira Boxill, Dionne Quarless, Natalie Miller, Lydia Bishop, Sherry Martindale, Shakira Springer, Janelle Sealy, Harriet Waithe (senior coach), Sandra Bruce-Small (assistant coach), Sonia Moore (manager) and Andrew Simpson (primary care/physiotherapist)

Not a lot to say about this group as I believe the BNA is in the process of trying to put together a group of about 15-17 players to draw from with respect to senior selection over the next two to three years leading up to the world tournament in 2011.

Shakira Boxhill and Shakira Springer, will be making their debut at senior level, having been part of the successful Barbados Under 16 team in 2005. Natalie Miller would have been invited to trials before, but was in a position to accept this time and she too will be making her debut.

Good luck girls and remember that a victory of any sort over South AFrica will do wonders to getting the Barbados world ranking back up to or surpassing 7th in the world. The July rankings show Barbados moving up two places from 2007 from 13th to 11th.

Well...the West Indies cricket team can tell the Sout AFricans about attaining the habit of losing and the difficulty of moving to the habit of winning.

I therefore cannot fault the South African coach on her reasons for this and future test series of this standard.

I await to hear the perspective of the Barbados Netball Association.

Seems as if the planners are hard at work to bring the sport of netball to the next level in terms of its national program.

The clubs and other stakeholders now need to get on board so that together we can make another attempt at raising our standards in every area of this great sport called netball.

Really..Well Coach Jordan ..its a miracle you would have to pull off, if Barbados is to be even competitive at the upcoming world youth championships in July 2009 in the Cook Islands.

At least 80 per cent of the competing countries already have their teams , and have been involved in at least one test series .

Why the Barbados Netball Association has slipped backed in this area is mind boggling. The 2005 World Youth World cup team was together for over two years and still had a rough time at the championships.

Why would we be doing this to our young netballers, kowning where they are coming from in terms of standard of local netball during the past season?

The adminstrators of netball must answer the question as to why even as I type this , no practise sessions have started. The coach was only appointed some time in August.
Are we serious? We are talking about world championships, not a club competition.

We are now going to ask a group of youngsters whose work ethic is to come to the stadium and have some fun playing netball, to overnight acquire the necessary attitude , strength, knowledge of game at the world level, fitness and desire to transform and uplift themselves into a team that can compete with Australia, New Zealand, Jamaica, England, Scotland, Samoa, Fiji, Malawi, Botswana, Singapore , etc.

Oh come on....We as adminstrators need to stop this foolishness. The Board of the BNA already has ample proof and evidence that you cannot prepare a team for world competiton in less than one year. Yet for whatever reason, they have managed to procrastinate and now have given a first time national coach the job of getting a Barbados team competitive for this level in 7-8 months.

All I can do is wish her lots of luck, and knowing that we are talking about sport..the truth is that all things are possible!!!!!! And yes Coach..we are hoping for a miracle!!!!!

Well well....South AFrica is really a shadow of the team it was as recent as five years ago.

An ever improving Malawi has defeated them again..this time giving them a good trouncing.

Barbados should feel that now is the time to defeat South AFrica and start to move up in the world rankings.

Please note that the South AFrican team that Malawi defeated was a club team. I still think that South African netball should be strong enough to rebut any club team from Malawi, unless it was a real miss match club tournament among the five nations.
