The 2011 netball season was launched on Sunday night with a touch of class befitting the only sport which is played exclusively by females with the new executive breathing a freshness and innovation into the sport at the Queen's College Hall in St. James.

The oft times fractious nature of the local netball was forgotten as the glamour of the opening ceremony provided content of great organization with the who is who of local sport and netball past and present being regaled and recognised at the event. While new president Juanita Cordle boasted of the 2% increase of teams, 29 out of 34 of the registered clubs took part in the uniform display with the Central Bank capturing the first spot.

Earlier Cordle unveiled her executive's vision of propelling netball further at the club, national and international level with the healthy relationship between the BNB and the Barbados Association of Netball Umpires (BARNU) promising even greater things.

While Cordle indicated that $45 000 would be needed for Barbados to take part in a tri series with Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago, May 8 – 14, the former national player underlined the fact that the senior national team was using every opportunity to sharpen for the World Championships in Singapore from July 1 – 10, this year.

The under 21 squad had started training since last October for the World Championship in Glasgow, Scotland in 2013 while the under 16 team was intensifying training for the Youth Championship in St. Kitts, this year.

In giving the feature address Permanent Secretary in Culture & Sport stressed that netball, like most of the other sports in the island, contained the skills and knowledge within their ranks of carrying the game forward. Farnum also promised the continued support of her ministry.

One of the features of the night was the naming of the various tables after past and presents stalwarts of netball with citations being given by MC Bryan Holder who as a teacher at Queen's College was at home in every sense of providing a seamless show. A brief presentation by Marvo Manning also enhanced the class of the evening.

With entertainment being provided by the matchless youth Cherish Breedy who powerfully sang, 'Don't Ever Give Up', the netballers would have been inspired for an impressive 2011 season. Monique James might not have the vocal power of Breedy but her rendition of 'I just can't Give Up Now' blended beautifully with the new vision of the netballers.

The lion share of the awards ended on the table where Pine Hill St. Barnabas were sitting although Structural Systems Silver Raiders, C.O. Williams Rangers, Guardian General Pride of Villa picked up a number of the lower division honours with the Raiders denying St. Barnabas the knockout crown.

Jamaica , as will other countries, will be seeking to move up the rankings in the world. They start their journey in 2011 with a home series against Australia.
Australia did not have its usual dominant time last year, losing their Commonwealth crown to their perennial foes and neighbors , New Zealand.
Australia and Jamaica meet in a test series in January and Australia has signaled its intentions.

The game was won by Barbados 48-37 eventualy, although it took a complete change of the attacking part of Barbados game to achieve this.
Coach Waithe started with Walcott at GA and Bishop at GS and Quarless at C with Smith at WA.
This combination was slow, unenterprising, and above all inept. Olivia Walcott has had her best days at this sport, and really ought not to be playing at this level. The quick, agile Walcott is no more and therefore she clogged up the entrance to the circle resulting in Bishop having to play outside the box . This meant that sometimes she was starved of the ball by an ineffective mid court.
The other end of the court was also in trouble, as captain Martindale did not appear to be present, and Puckeirin has never been useful at goal keeper. The scottish attack had a ball ..... with the goal shooter rolling and finishing about a foot away from the pool in the middle of the goal circle. Had the Scottish lass been more accurate , her country would have led Barbados by at least five goals at half time.

However, the third quarter saw a new attacking unit of Piggott-GA, Browne -GS, Shepherd - WA and Quarless back at centre after a minor spill. Piggott was quick and roamed the centre court at will, and when necessary put some good passes into GS Browne. This stopped Scotland in their tracks and Bdos stretched their lead and eventually won fairly comfortably.

Coach Waithe must now be sure that Walcott cannot play Goal attack at this level any longer, no matter how well she played in the past. She must also be aware that if Bishop does not get the ball she cannot shoot, so the centre court must work out a much better way to get the ball to her. At the other end, the defenders need real work at their reflexes and man-to-man tactics.

Barbados should not have to fight to beat this scottish team, as it is obviously in the rebuilding stage , although their attacking machine seems well oiled..it just need a better finishing job and less turn overs.

Hello Umpires:

The second event, this time a practical clinic for all practicing umpires will be held at the netball stadium on Thursday, May 28, starting at 6.00pm -8.30 pm.

This clinic will be used for umpires to critique and demonstrate the rules which they are having particular difficulty with while executing their duties during the present season. Pointers will also be given on basic umpiring techniques.

You should therefore be dressed for a practical umpires session..e.g. soft shoes, track pants or netball skirt, whistle, rule book.

The session will be conducted by Mrs... Deborah Lynch Theobalds , in conjunction with some senior umpires.

Any first timers who desire may come along for the experience, but at this session, the umpires who are officiating in the 2009 season will be the prime participants.

BARBADOS LOST THE DECIDER TO JAMAICA 54-19

Well Barbados Under 16 team did not produce the type of game necessary to stop the tall Jamaican goal shooter (6ft 9 ins) and so lost the all important encounter disappointingly...54-19.

It must be admitted that there was little that the Barbados defence could do on a one of one situation with the JA goal shooter. But the question must be asked what contributed to so many of Barbados's centre passes being stolen, and what was the difficulty in the attack getting the ball to the Barbadian goal circle as we only had 29 attempts. Is it the same old same old again. i.e.....
Barbadian players were at a decided height disadvantage in all parts of the court. Is there nothing that can be done to nullify what is a height disadvantage?
Just a note on the Jamaican goal shooter...She was introduced to the sport three months before last year's Under 16 tournament, having not played the game before. Her motor skills, passing ability, and general netball skills leave a lot to be desired. Yet she is able to cause her team to win!!!!!!!!

"Barbados easily dispatched Dominica 40-7 in their morning match of the 10th CNA Jean Pierre U16 Competition. In a match like this what Barbados should have been looking to do is boost their goal average since winning the game was a forgone conclusion. Interval scores were 9-3, 22-6, and 32-6.
Coach Julie Phillips used this opportunity to introduce two new shooters, and try out some different shooting combinations. Their shooting stats is as follows:
Chemayne Alleyne 29-21, Shannon Hackett 10-6, Tonisha Rock-Yaw 10-5 and Mariah Greenidge 11-8.

Pine Hill St. Barnabas netball team walked away with the prize for the best team on parade when the 2009 BNA season opened in what could be described as a ceremony without hype at the netball stadium in Waterford , Barbados.

Several of the teams obviously have not received their 2009 playing uniforms, and this resulted in some teams parading with as little as two or three players!!!!!!!

The Minister of Sports is yet to grace this predominantly female sport with her presence, but she had a previous engagement and the feature address was done by the acting deputy director of sports - Mr. Donovan.

Four of the six scheduled knock out games were played .

Sources connected with Chris Brown and Rihanna tell TMZ Brown's lawyer, Mark Geragos, wants the judge to give Rihanna a pass from testifying because of leaks in the case.

We're told Geragos and Rihanna's lawyer, Donald Etra, believe Rihanna was compromised when her name surfaced as the alleged victim in the beating. They claim this and other leaks violate her privacy rights and therefore she should not have to further put herself out to the public by testifying against Brown in the case.

It's further proof Rihanna and Brown are back together and in lockstep.

Geragos asked to meet with the judge in chambers, along with the prosecutors, on March 23 to discuss letting Rihanna off the hook. Brown's arraignment is set for April 6.

Trinidad netball venue not ready - IFNA PRESIDENT SAYS

International Federation of Netball Associations (IFNA) president, Molly May Rhone, says a lot of work needs to be done on the netball facilities at the Jean Pierre Complex to get the venue ready for the inaugural Caribbean Games in July.

Speaking to the media Tuesday at a press conference at the Caribbean Games headquarters at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Jamaican Rhone said several areas need to be uplifted at the venue, named after Trinidad and Tobago's World Netball Championship 1979 winning team-member (Jean Pierre).

"It is no secret that the planned facility is not in the best shape that it could be," she said.

"The major work is the resurfacing of the court but there is also the lighting, the seating and the changing room. Every aspect of the facility needs to be worked on," Rhone added.

The IFNA boss says she met with the Minister of Sport and Youth affairs, Gary Hunt, who assured her that preparations would be completed by the first week of June.

"We would have preferred it to be ready earlier so we could run some tests, but we will still have that opportunity," she said.

Despite the conditions at the Jean Pierre Complex, the IFNA president said she was very impressed with the work ethic of the Local Organising Committee and expected a successful hosting of the games.

"I would like to congratulate the organising committee with the work they have done so far and from what I have seen they have done a great job. I have seen some very dedicated people and have seen that they are working very hard," Rhone said.

The netball category of the Caribbean Games will take place from July 12-19.

Eight countries - Jamaica, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Barbados, St Lucia, Grenada, St Kitts and Nevis, Antigua and Barbuda and T&T - will take part in the competition.

The inaugural Caribbean Games, being staged under the auspices of the Caribbean Association of National Olympic Committees, will also feature track and field, boxing, tennis and volleyball.

The sunshine girls lost the first test match to England after an extremely slow start resulting in England having a commanding 21-9 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Jamaicans found their feet in portions of the game but would want to start a lot more positively in the second game.

NEW RULES FOR NETBALL WORLD SERIES IN OCTOBER 2009

Hi guys;

Here are the rules for the NETBALL WORLD SERIES to be played in Manchester England between the top six countries in the world - Australia, New Zealand, England, Jamaica, Malawi and Samoa:

THE NEW RULES

1. Matches will be 4 x 6 minutes with 3 x 2 minutes breaks

2. An unlimited number of rolling substitutions per team per quarter is allowed. Each team may make any number of rolling substitutions at any one time. A rolling substitute may enter the game while play is in progress. There will be a designated substitution box at each transverse line, and located next to the coaching area, where rolling substitute/s shall wait holding up a substitution paddle indicating the player/s to be substituted. Team changes may not be made during a rolling substitution, as the game is not stopped

3. The official team bench is located on the opposite side of the court from the team benches and substitution boxes

4. After a goal is scored, the game restarts from a centre pass taken by the team who conceded the last goal. The captain winning the toss chooses end or first centre pass at the start of the first and third quarter. The other team will have first centre pass at the start of the second and fourth quarter.

5. There is no Umpire whistle after a goal is scored.

6. Coaches will be allowed to coach from the team bench or coaching area, located in front of their team bench. The coaching area will be marked on the floor.

7. Each team will elect one quarter as a power play when any goals scored will be doubled. The elected power play quarter must be notified by the coach before the quarter commences, by pressing the control button to turn on a light.

8. Shooters may shoot from inside or outside of the goal circle. All successful goals from outside the goal circle will be worth double i.e. two goal points. The umpire will signal a successful goal by raising one hand for one goal point and two hands for two goal points (In a power play this could result in 1 goal scoring 2 goal points or 4 goal points)

9. All stoppages for injury or illness will be 30 seconds

In what could only be described as a passive demononstration of some kind, the Barbados Netball Association's general meeting called yesterday had a total of 11 persons in attendance.

Two members of the Board and either five or six clubs were represented at what should have been an important meeting, as a second attempt at voting for the first vice president and secretary of the Association was the main item on the agenda.

In what in some circles is being described as a farce...Juanita Cordle was elected the First Vice President, and Alicia Jemmott the Secretary.There was one other nominee for each post, but the persons nominated were not at the meeting.

I am very aware of the poor record clubs in sport in Barbados have with respect to attending meetings,but it says nothing for this sport, that two of its most important positions were vacant after the annual general meeting, a second attempt was made on old year's evening when six persons attended, and on the third attempt less than 15 persons were at this meeting.
I think I will be stating the obvious if I say that something is not scoring here..but I am hoping that despite yesterday's result, the Board and the entire netball fraternity could get its act together and move the sport forward in what will be a very challenging year, especially in the financial area.

first let me apologise for not doing the expected thing in wishing everyone a happy xmas and all the best for the new year. HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE AND I WISH THAT YOU ARE ABLE TO ATTAIN MOST OF IF NOT ALL YOUR GOALS THIS YEAR.

Netball wise..in the region, Jamaica has stepped up its preparation for the 2009 Wporld Youth Cup, Tobago's school competition is on, The Bdos Workers Union awards ceremony was held and announcement made that a computer scholarship at the Bdos Workers Union College will be on offer in this year's competition.

Over in Australia and New Zealand, plans are all but completed for the second semi professional tournament with another Jamaican netballer set to join the tournament.

In Barbados the Under 16 and the Under 21 squads are at practise at different stages in preparation for their upcoming engagements in April and July.

The night of December 4th 2008 was not a particularly good one for the administration of netball in Barbados.

Without going into the details, at the end of the night of the 35th Annual general meeting of the BNA, two posts on the seven member board remained vacant.

The incumbent president, Octavia Gibson, was elected unopposed. However, the entire netball fraternity was in a state of shock and disbelief when it was discovered that the person who was touted to challenge Ms. Gibson, was not nominated by her club. This will go down as one of the mysteries of sport generally in 2008. Suffice is to say, that this was a really unfortunate occurrence.

There was no nomination for the post of first vice president or the post of secretary.
Daisy Browne was re-elected the Treasurer, while Sharon Corbin of Banks Spurs sits on the Board for the first time in the position of Assistant Secretary/Treasurer.
Veronica Harris and Frank Harper were elected as the other directors.

The Association will now be in a state of abeyance as according to the constitution a period of 30 days must elapse before any attempt is made to reconvene the meeting. In the event that no nominations are received, nominations will be accepted from the floor!!!!!!!

There are persons who were prepared to offer themselves for the unfilled posts, but for varying reasons their nomination forms were not the right place at the right time.

Yeah Yeah,....But please let us do something at the same time with the number of times the umpires whistle is blown.

Do some thing innovative with the obstruction rule..like not playing it outside the goal circle..but leave the contact rule.

We in netball don't need the power play as it does not add to the game if a team is leading by far.

Some spot outside the circle should be marked at the power spot and anytime a goal is scored from there it is worth two.

Lets really go for it..

I believe every country in the Caribbean can identify with these sentiments.
Barbados recognised the importance of competition other than against its neigbors leading up to the world championships in 2003. As a result of playing aginst Australia, New Zealand, England, South Africa and Jamaica , Barbados landed a 7th place world ranking.

Barbados just went on a tour of South Africa , which caused its rating to drop to twelve at this time.

Barbados's inability to play intense and tough netball within a 48 hour period has manifested itself again... it appears the Bajans forgot to turn up for the final test against South AFrica and were trounced, after being competitive in the first two tests, although losing.

This obviously speaks to the team's fitness level both physcial and mental and clearly is an area which needs to be worked on.

Barbados goal shooter Lydia Bishop had a great second test missing only three of her attempts at goal. Have not heard about many other outstanding performances by the Barbados players. The South AFrican coach seemed to be fairly satified with her players performance, despite the closeness of the first two matches.

South AFrica will be in the Caribbean next week - Jamaica to be precise - where they will play a tri nation test series involving host Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago.

Well..Well.... The more things change, the more things remain the same. Was that second test victory by England a flash in the pan...What's the explanation for moving from playing so well to playing so bad in the space of 24 hours.

Its a difficult pill to swallow..As the article says..England are rated third in the world and the second rated team has defeated them by over 40 goals...it really does not give the countries rated 5-10 any encouragement.

Lets see what happens when Barbados (11) plays South AFrica(9) and when Jamaica (4) plays South AFrica(11)

Maybe these upcoming test matches will show netball in a greater light on the world stage.

Guyana to sign controversial EPA with Europe

In the face of threats to its main exports to the bloc
GUYANA will sign the controversial new trading agreement with the European Union (EU) under threats to its main exports to the bloc and in solidarity with other countries in the Caribbean, President Bharrat Jagdeo announced yesterday.

But he said Guyana will press for the mounting of a massive lobby for a better Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) within the 79-nation African, Caribbean, Pacific (ACP) group.

He maintained that the signing of the agreement by the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and the Dominican Republic at this time is a betrayal of the ACP.

Mr. Jagdeo has opposed the agreement and has pushed for two clauses to be included before Guyana signs on:

** The first is that in its implementation should any of the provisions of the EPA conflict with the CARICOM Revised Treaty of Chaguaramas the revised treaty would take precedence, thereby safeguarding the regional integration process.

** The second is for a review of the EPA every five years to look at the socio-economic impact of the agreement on the people of the region and a commitment by Europe to address the adverse impact.

Mr. Jagdeo said Guyana fought for the inclusion of these two clauses and now other countries are shamelessly taking credit for them.

He said Guyana will also sign on to the EPA if the Generalised System of Preferences (GSP) under World Trade Organisation (WTO) rules is imposed on this country’s exports to Europe.

Head of the Delegation of the European Commission to Guyana, Mr. Geert Heikens, told reporters here, on Monday, that for countries not signing the EPA, there will be no agreement and the GSP will be applied according to WTO rules.

Heikens said the EPA would benefit both parties noting that it addresses not only goods but services and trade issues as well.

President Jagdeo last week said top officials of the European Commission and governments in Europe had confided in him that some CARICOM members had asked them to “lean hard” on Guyana to sign the EPA with the EU in its current form.

Mr. Jagdeo told reporters at his office the unnamed CARICOM members argued that they would lose face if Guyana were to succeed in getting key changes to the agreement.

“I firmly believe it’s a bad agreement for the region and that’s why I continue to fight and seek changes to the agreement…(but) some countries seem more interested in saving face than getting a better agreement”, he said.

Despite his disappointment at the turn of events, Mr. Jagdeo said Guyana remains a strong member of CARICOM. “I don’t allow setbacks on one issue to daunt me…I can’t hold the future of the people of this region hostage based on my current likes or dislikes.”

He said the push by some in the region to sign the deal on October 15 was a “slap in the face” of other members of the ACP that took a stand at their summit which ended earlier this month in the Ghana capital, Accra.

It could undermine ACP unity, he warned, and said the Accra decision can lead to a better EPA for the bloc.

The summit agreed that a troika representing the entire grouping should meet by the end of this month and lobby Europe on the concerns raised about the current EPA and “try to get a more favourable EPA” for the ACP.

“It was agreed that a troika will continue to pursue our concerns at the highest level in the European Union”, he said.

He stressed that by not signing the EPA, Guyana has more to lose than any other CARICOM member and it should have been in the front row of those moving to conclude the new arrangement.

Fifty-three percent of this country’s imports from Europe already come in without any tariffs, so that Guyana, in the first five years, does not have to commit to any serious liberalisation.

It also stands to lose the most because it is the largest commodity exporter to Europe, he maintained.

Guyana’s exports to Europe include sugar, rice and rum.

According to a Nation Newspaper report The Barbados Netball Association has selected the following persons to represent Barbados in the three match test series in South Africa:
Laurel Browne, Lisa Puckerin, Nikita Piggott, Kizzy Marville, Sabrina Smith, Shekira Boxill, Dionne Quarless, Natalie Miller, Lydia Bishop, Sherry Martindale, Shakira Springer, Janelle Sealy, Harriet Waithe (senior coach), Sandra Bruce-Small (assistant coach), Sonia Moore (manager) and Andrew Simpson (primary care/physiotherapist)

Not a lot to say about this group as I believe the BNA is in the process of trying to put together a group of about 15-17 players to draw from with respect to senior selection over the next two to three years leading up to the world tournament in 2011.

Shakira Boxhill and Shakira Springer, will be making their debut at senior level, having been part of the successful Barbados Under 16 team in 2005. Natalie Miller would have been invited to trials before, but was in a position to accept this time and she too will be making her debut.

Good luck girls and remember that a victory of any sort over South AFrica will do wonders to getting the Barbados world ranking back up to or surpassing 7th in the world. The July rankings show Barbados moving up two places from 2007 from 13th to 11th.

Well...the West Indies cricket team can tell the Sout AFricans about attaining the habit of losing and the difficulty of moving to the habit of winning.

I therefore cannot fault the South African coach on her reasons for this and future test series of this standard.

Well:

Not too much longer to wait to see who will be the new president of the United States.

Lots of people in the Caribbean are wishing Obama in, simply because as they see it ..it would be the first time that a black man is the presiden of the United States of America.

I just want to caution this group that the president of the United States is dictated to by the policy makers of the USA. Therefore whether the president is black or white...it is the policy makers who matter.

Obama will not be able to do "what he thinks should be done"..if it fits in with what the policy makers want, then so be it..otherwise he will forget it.

so please don't let us believe for one moment that Mr. Obama is going to be able to change the direction of the USA foreign, ecomomic or social policy unless it fits it with what the guys on Capitol Hill and the Foreign Relations committee want.

In other words..please let us stay real

The clubs and other stakeholders now need to get on board so that together we can make another attempt at raising our standards in every area of this great sport called netball.
